Prof P Talman after completing a science degree undertook training as a specialist neurologist and subsequently completed a PhD in developmental neurobiology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in 1995. He initially practiced as a clinical Neurologist at Monash Medical Centre Clayton as the Director of Stroke and then moved to Barwon Health in 2002. Over a 20-year period at Barwon Health he acted initially as the clinical director for medical services and then as director of Neurosciences. He has been actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education throughout his career.
His primary area of research has been establishing the motor neuron disease national data registry. He collaborates nationally and internationally in MND and runs a multidisciplinary clinic for MND at Barwon Health. He is an executive member of the Pan-Asia Consortium for ALS MND (PACTALS) and is responsible for hosting the 2025 PACTALS conference in Melbourne.
