Professor Peter Choong is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in bone and soft tissue tumour surgery, as well as joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee. Fellowship trained at the Mayo Clinic, USA, and Lund University Hospital, Sweden, he focuses on advancing orthopaedic care through clinical practice, research, and education.
Professor Choong is a Fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science. His expertise is recognised internationally, and he is a member of several orthopaedic tumour societies worldwide, where he collaborates with other experts to advance the understanding and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumours.
As the Head of the Department of Surgery at the Melbourne Medical School, he leads a research program on tissue engineering of cartilage, osteoarthritis surgery, and the development of value-based orthopaedic care models. His work in tissue engineering aims to improve outcomes for patients with cartilage damage and degenerative joint diseases.
Professor Choong was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) at the 2022 Queen's Birthday honours for his contributions to medicine, research, teaching and professional societies.
