Ram is a surgeon with 30 years of practising experience in the field of hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction. He founded the Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Surgeons community, which is 6000-strong at present. He has experience over a very wide range of abdominal operations in both laparoscopic and open formats. This includes laparoscopic approaches to bariatric procedures, gall bladder and biliary problems, routine colorectal procedures, removal of intra- and retroperitoneal lesions, emergency management of abdominal conditions like perforations, bowel obstructions and diverticulitis. Management of post-bariatric surgery complications (including revision surgery) is also an area he is familiar with.
Robotic surgery is also part of his preferred approaches to many abdominal surgical problems.
In the field of hernia surgery, Ram is an exponent of most modern day surgical approaches in the field, including procedures like eTEP, robotic ventral TAPP, purely extraperitoneal approaches to giant hernias, Fasciotens, etc. He also uses a multidisciplinary approach to preoperative optimisation of complex hernia patients, including use of weight loss, Botox and bariatric surgery. He also has considerable experience in the management of post-operative complications after hernia surgeries done previously in varied environments.
He is widely published, and has edited two international books on modern hernia surgery in 2024-2025.
