Chamara Basnayake is a Melbourne-trained gastroenterologist and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne, with a public hospital appointment at St Vincent’s Public Hospital Melbourne.
He provides comprehensive general gastroenterology care, including diagnostic endoscopy, and manages a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions.
He has particular expertise in disorders of gut–brain interaction, oesophageal motility disorders and inflammatory bowel disease. He leads the oesophageal physiology laboratory and functional gut disorders service at St Vincent’s Public Hospital.
Chamara completed his gastroenterology training at Monash Medical Centre, where he was chief resident, and St Vincent’s Public Hospital Melbourne, followed by a PhD at the University of Melbourne focused on functional gastrointestinal disorders. He subsequently undertook advanced fellowship training in oesophageal motility disorders at KU Leuven in Belgium.
He is an active clinician–researcher and supervises doctoral research in IBD and functional gastrointestinal disorders. His work has received national and international recognition, including the Ray Clouse Award for the world’s best publication in Functional Gut Disorders and the TJ Martin Prize for the best PhD thesis at St Vincent’s Hospital. He is an active member for national and international guidelines on functional gastrointestinal disorders and EoE.
